Estancia La Jolla Fusion Wedding

Every wedding is different, and that's exactly why we love what we do.

Sam and Sheetal's wedding at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa wasn't about following every tradition or planning the biggest celebration possible. Instead, they built a wedding weekend around the people they cared about most.

Although the two are planning a larger traditional Indian wedding in Indonesia next year, they wanted to celebrate with their closest family and friends here in Southern California. More importantly, they wanted Sam's father to be part of their wedding day. As a paraplegic, traveling internationally wasn't an option, so hosting an intimate celebration in La Jolla ensured that everyone who mattered most could be there. From the beginning, the weekend felt personal, intentional, and completely true to who they are.

Kicking Off the Weekend in La Jolla

I arrived in San Diego the evening before the wedding to photograph the welcome dinner at Lucrezia in La Jolla. The restaurant had reserved their outdoor patio exclusively for the couple and their guests, creating the perfect setting for everyone to unwind before the wedding day. There wasn't a strict timeline to follow or portraits to rush through. It was simply an evening of conversation, great food, and families getting to know one another before the celebration officially began. I always enjoy photographing welcome events because they tell an important part of the story. By the time the wedding day arrives, everyone already feels connected.

Wedding Day at Estancia La Jolla

Wedding day began that afternoon at one of our favorite venues in San Diego. Estancia La Jolla has become one of the premier locations for multicultural weddings because of its beautiful Spanish architecture, lush gardens, and multiple outdoor event spaces. It offers plenty of flexibility while still feeling intimate, even for larger celebrations. We began with getting ready before photographing Sam and Sheetal's first look. One thing couples don't always realize is that Estancia is an active luxury resort. Guests are constantly moving throughout the property, and some of the most beautiful portrait locations also happen to be some of the busiest. Rather than changing locations, we simply adapted. We watched the flow of foot traffic, politely paused guests when appropriate, and created a quiet moment where Sam and Sheetal could enjoy seeing each other for the first time. It's one of those behind-the-scenes parts of wedding photography that couples rarely notice, but experience at a venue like Estancia makes a huge difference.

Building the Timeline Around Their Priorities

One thing Sam and Sheetal made clear from the beginning was that they wanted to spend cocktail hour with their guests. Instead of disappearing for an hour after the ceremony, they wanted to actually enjoy the celebration they'd spent months planning. Rosie served as the lead planner for the weekend through Sweet Love Designs, and together we built a timeline that made that possible. By photographing the first look, bridal party, and most family portraits before the ceremony, we only needed a few additional portraits afterward before sending the newlyweds straight to cocktail hour. It kept the day moving naturally while allowing them to spend more time with the people who traveled to celebrate alongside them.

A Beautiful Blend of Two Cultures

Although the overall structure of the ceremony felt familiar to a traditional Western wedding, several meaningful Indian traditions were thoughtfully woven into the celebration. One of my favorite moments came when Sam and Sheetal exchanged flower garlands before feeding one another after the ceremony. It was a beautiful way to honor Sheetal's heritage while introducing many of their guests to traditions they may have never experienced before. Throughout the day, it never felt like two different cultures sharing the same event. It simply felt like one wedding that represented both families equally.

A Reception That Felt Fresh for Summer

After cocktail hour, everyone gathered inside Estancia's Grande Room for the reception. The overall design perfectly matched the atmosphere of the weekend. Soft blush florals, elegant table settings, and subtle décor paid homage to traditional Indian wedding colors while maintaining a clean, timeless aesthetic that felt fresh for a Southern California summer wedding.  One detail that stood out to me was something most guests probably never noticed. Sheetal asked our entire photography and video team to wear white or very light-colored shirts throughout the day. It was another example of how intentionally every detail had been considered, right down to the vendors working behind the scenes.

Photo and Video Working Together

This wedding was covered by both our photography and video teams.

American Portra photographed the entire celebration while Nico led the wedding film alongside his second videographer. Sidanth photographed with me throughout the wedding day, allowing us to document multiple perspectives while keeping the experience relaxed for the couple. When photo and video teams work together regularly, everything becomes more efficient. We understand each other's workflow, communicate throughout the day, and make sure we're never competing for the same moment. The result is a smoother experience for our couples and stronger final galleries and films.

Experience Matters

We've been photographing South Asian weddings since 2021 and have had the privilege of documenting celebrations across many cultures throughout California. From Hindu and Sikh weddings to multicultural celebrations like Sam and Sheetal's, we've also photographed Korean, Chinese, Mexican, Polynesian, Russian, Polish, and many other cultural weddings. Each celebration is different. Every family has traditions that matter to them. Our job isn't to memorize every custom—it's to understand what's important to each couple, anticipate meaningful moments before they happen, and document the day in a way that feels natural without interrupting it.

That's what allows us to stay calm when timelines shift, adapt quickly when locations get busy, and create photographs that feel genuine instead of staged.

A Wedding Centered Around Family

Looking back, what I'll remember most about Sam and Sheetal's wedding isn't the venue or even the beautiful details. It was the intention behind every decision. Hosting a wedding in La Jolla so Sam's father could experience the day. Creating a timeline that prioritized time with family over hours of portraits. Blending two cultures in a way that felt effortless instead of forced. Those choices are what made the weekend memorable. Congratulations again, Sam and Sheetal. Thank you for trusting us to document such an important chapter in your lives.

Vendor Team

A celebration like this comes together because of an incredible team of professionals working behind the scenes. It was a pleasure collaborating with everyone who helped bring Sam and Sheetal's vision to life.
